Encourage students to identify recyclable materials, such as plastic, glass, aluminum, and newspaper, and recycle them properly. Proper recycling can be done either through their disposal company or at a recycle center in the community. This activity can be modeled first in the classroom and repeated at home. Use the Recycle Tally Sheet link to get family members involved in the learning process with their student. This sheet asks parents to help their students to tally the recyclable materials used in one school week at their home. Send this sheet home on Monday, to be returned on Friday with a parent involvement signature. Students can practice their sorting and counting skills by doing this activity. On Friday, when they return with their completed tally sheets, they can share their experience verbally. A large bar graph can be created by the teacher on poster paper in the front of the classroom and the data for the entire class can be tabulated. This class total tabulation will make a big impression on the students. They will see that while what each of is able to recycle may not seem like much, when we ALL participate we can have a very large positive impact on our environment. |
